Bio:
Approximate age:34 years young Residence:Originally from Incline Village NV, Currently living in Reno NV, and dreaming daily about moving back to Incline Village NV:) Current Sled(s):2008 SkiDoo 800 XP 146 Favorite Terrain:POW!!! I love the pow… Bottomless pow… Nuclear days when it is dumping, visibility is minimal, and the tracks on the way out are found only on the smile inside your helmet on the way back!!! You’ve got your snow science hat on, roads are getting closed all around you and even the driving to and from the put in is an adventure. There is something so magical about being out there in conditions that others rarely experience. Being in the knowing that talent, good decision making, and the crew you are with is the only way back to the truck is an awesome sensation. You know the days… Small crew of talent, zest for the unknown, pack full of everything you need to survive, most intense full-body workout of your life, deep in the trees, strategizing to get up so you can throw the ridiculous overhead downhill pow turns that make you present in the pure joy that is snow… My name is Grant Korgan and I love the pow! What other sports do you do in the off season:Recovery! On March 5th 2010 I bust fractured my first lumbar vertebrae deep on Sonora Pass in the Sierra mountains of California. Lucky to be riding with my ultra bros and now personal heros Duncan Lee, Ryan Oddo, and Ken Evens, these superstar snow safety professionals made all the correct decisions, in all the right order, at all the perfect times, without hesitation, and a deep back country helicopter rescue saved my life and allowed me to begin the long process of recovery! What began with zero feeling or movement below my belly button has now, after 21 months of 6-8hr/day therapy and working out, manifested into feeling and movement all the way down to my knees!!! I am now walking in a set of arm crutches and on March 5th 2011, I climbed back on that very same sled, and with friends all around, I ROOSTED AGAIN!!! Outside of sledding, I love to whitewater kayak, and do every type of activity based recovery therapy that my wife and I can think of (hand cycle, swim, long distance walking (1 mile is my current distance record), and intense indoor workouts). This past year, I have been given the opportunity to XC ski 100 miles to the geographic South Pole on the centennial anniversary of the Robert Falcon Scott Tera Nova Expedition. This January 2012, I will ski to share the message of the enduring human spirit, the greatness that we all have within, and, regardless of perceived abilities, everyone can accomplish everything they put their hearts and minds to. The South Pole Push Expedition aims to raise awareness of spinal cord injury and promote the ultra amazing and incredible High Fives Foundation that has done so much to help myself and others return to the sports they love! What is the most memorable moment from last season:I DID A POW TURN (or three)!!! Surrounded by amazing friends and my blinding hot wife Shawna, on March 5th 2011, I threw a leg over, fired up my 800, and throttled that savage machine all damn day!!! What is your prediction for snowfall this coming season:THIS IS THE YEAR OF POW!!! SnowPocolypse in Tahoe (Feb – June) 2012!!! Plans for the up coming season that you have:December 29th, our expedition team leaves for Punta Arenas Chile, and on January 7th 2012 I arrive on the polar plateau of Antarctica, 100 miles away from the goal of skiing, 10 miles a day for 10 straight days, in the name of all that is possible, the High Fives Foundation, and the enduring human spirit, to the geographic South Pole!!! And…. In February, we plan to move in with Duncan (I don’t know if he fully knows this yet), leave my sled on his deck, steal all his AA stickers, use roosting as my recovery therapy, walk around his house with no pants, invite High Fives founder Roy Tuscany over for dinner, ride everyday, film the crew KILLING IT, and hang with my dawg for a solid month! This season is gonna be all-time!!! |
